Curriculum Vitæ - Maurizio Santoro

Name: Maurizio Santoro
Date of birth: July 15, 1972
Birth place: Naples, Italy
Nationality: Italian and German
Profession: Engineer, Dr. phil. nat.
Responsibility within Gamma: Senior project scientist

Key Qualifications
The main experience of M. Santoro is in the development of applications of active microwave data. His research included processing, analyses and interpretation of space-borne data, modelling of interferometric responses of forests and development of classification algorithm for forests and urban areas. Currently he is very active in SAR interferometric data processing and the development of applications of single-pass as well as repeat-pass SAR interferometry for land-use classification, and the retrieval of geophysical and biophysical parameters over land (e.g. forestry, agricultural, and hydrological applications).

Professional Education
2003 Ph.D. in Natural Sciences from the Friedrich-Schiller University, Jena, Germany, for a thesis on estimation of biophysical parameters in boreal forests from ERS and JERS SAR interferometry..
2001 Licentiate of Engineering (Lic. Eng.) from Chalmers University of Technology, Gothenburg, Sweden with a thesis on the characterization of boreal forests and urban areas using ERS interferometric SAR coherence.
1998 Laurea (M.S.) in Aerospace Engineering from the University of Naples, “Federico II”, Italy for experimental studies and modelling of spaceborne interferometric SAR data in forestry.

Employment Record
2006-date Research scientist of GAMMA Remote Sensing Research and Consulting Ltd. Main tasks are the development of remote sensing applications based on active microwave data.
2004-2005 Research scientist on a postdoctoral position at the Friedrich-Schiller University of Jena, Germany. Research on applications of SAR data in forestry. Coordination of the EU-funded SIBERIA-II Project – Multi-sensor concepts for Greenhouse Gas Accounting of Northern Eurasia (5th Framework Programme) and of the Forest DRAGON Project with the Sino-European ESA-NRSCC cooperation programme.
